The invention relates to screening apparatuses for processing ungraded items such as scrap metal that has been broken up in the crusher. The apparatus is characterised in that: - firstly, at least one of the screening zones 13 is formed by a series of plates 24 which, viewed in longitudinal section, are parallel with each other but distributed, on the one hand, in a direction parallel to each of them at intervals equal to their passages 14, 15 and, on the other hand, in a direction perpendicular to each of the plates, slightly staggered so that materials that pass the downstream edge 25 of one plate drop somewhat beyond the upstream edge of the plate following, and - also, to form the passages 14, 15 provided in the plates, with the exception of the last plate, openings 27 of generally U-shaped section are formed in these plates beginning at their downstream edge 25. <IMAGE>
