<p>NEW MATERIAL:A carboxylic acid of formula I (R is H, methyl or hydroxyl; X is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, etc.; Y is aryl, cycloalkyl, heterocyclic, etc.; A is divalent non-cyclic hydrocarbon, etc.; but excludes a case wherein R is H or methyl; X is 1-methylpropyl; the group -A-Y is H or alkyl), an ester thereof and a salt thereof and a lactone compound of formula II. EXAMPLE:1-(2-Methylbutylyl)-3,4-dihydro-6-oxo-4-benzyloxyiminoiso ML-236A lactone. USE:The carboxylic acid of formula I exhibits a serum cholesterol reducing action and is useful as a hyperlipidemia-treating agent or an arterial sclerosis- preventing agent. PREPARATION:A compound of formula III as a starting substance is converted into a compound of formula IV (R<5> is H or a protecting group for the hydroxyl group), from which the protecting group is removed to give the compound of formula II, followed by cleaving the lactone portion thereof to provide the compound of formula I.</p> |
