NEW MATERIAL:A substituted cyclopentanone and cyclohexanone derivative of formula I [X is (alpha-OZ, beta-H) or (alpha-H, beta-OZ); Y is (alpha-OZ', beta-H) or (alpha-H, beta-OZ'); Z and Z' are H or protecting group for hydroxyl group; Z and Z' may be same or different with each other; R' is H, 1-10C (substituted) alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or (substituted) phenyl; n is 1 or 2]. EXAMPLE:A compound of formula II. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate for prostaglandins. PREPARATION:A compound of formula III is cyclized in the presence of a hypohalogenous acid salt or a base and a halogen gas, especially preferably in the presence of sodium hypochlorite, preferably at 0-50 deg.C to give the compound of formula I. The compound of formula I is subjected to a hydrogenolysis reaction in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst to give a compound of formula IV useful as a synthetic intermediate for novel prostaglandins. |
