Scanning devices having mechanical feelers (probes) are already known, but they can be used only to a limited extent since their mode of operation depends to a large extent on the nature of the material and on the material surface. The novel method and the device operating according to this method are, by contrast, intended to be capable of universal use. For this purpose, the scanning is carried out in a contactless fashion via the scanning medium of air between a sensor nozzle (11, 51, 81) and the surface (36, 52, 82) to be scanned. The separation between the sensor nozzle (11, 31, 81) and the surface (36, 52, 82) serves as desired value, and the deviations, occurring in the event of changes in separation, are converted by a circuit element (20) and a voltage divider (25) respectively into a voltage value, which via a servoamplifier (30) control NC drives and thus once again return the sensor nozzle (11, 51, 81) and the tool (40) coupled thereto to the separation determined at the beginning. The scanning device can be used to copy models and can be used directly at the tool to scan the workpiece contour or workpiece surface during processing. <IMAGE>
