In steam generators having large heat storage masses, the heat has to be dissipated in an emergency. In a steam generator having a water drum there is the risk of the drum boiling off (evaporating, flashing). In order to avoid this, it is provided that in the case of a steam generator having a drum (5) and at least one evaporator (7) fed therefrom the water present in the feed water preheater (3) is conveyed into the drum by means of the emergency pump (14), while at the same time saturated steam flows back from the drum into the feed water preheater.
