To at least partly exchange a supporting liquid, located in a trench for constructing a trench wall or the like, by a free-flowing, hardening exchange mass, horizontal separation is carried out by means of a closing plate in the supporting liquid at the level of the base plane of the supporting-liquid column to be exchanged, then the exchange mass is fed under the horizontal separation or closing plate and in the process is raised in a controlled manner. The exchange is possible in this respect without intermixing effects if a compressed-air layer is moved upwards in a controlled manner as horizontal separation as a function of its pressure or the closing plate is completed to form a compressed-air chamber which enables the compressed-air layer to form under the closing plate. <IMAGE>
