A wire electrode for a wire cut electric discharge apparatus for effecting electric discharges in a small gap through a work liquid comprises a core wire (6) and a core wire coating layer (7) formed on the core wire wherein the core wire is formed by a material having higher thermal conductivity than the core wire coating layer (7) which is formed by a material having a high mechanical strength. An outer layer (8) made of a material having good electric discharge properties is coated on the core wire coating layer.
