A process for treating pretroleum refinery sludge to produce a coke-like residue product wherein an oily petroleum refinery sludge containing organic solid material boiling above 1000 DEG F and water is heated to a temperature above the boiling point of water and below the thermal cracking temperature of hydrocarbons and water in the sludge forms steam used to steam strip any light hydrocarbons from the organic solid material which is recovered as a solid coke-like residue product.
