A process for reducing the molecular weight of water-soluble polyacrylic acid or salts thereof except for poly alpha-hydroxyacrylic acid salts, polyacrylamide or polyacrylonitrile hydrolyzates, characterized in that an aqueous polymer solution having a pH value of 4 to 9 is treated with 0.01 to 20% by weight, based on the polymer, of hydrogen peroxide at 20 to 100 degrees C.
