A foundry chill mould with a sepn, housing is claimed and comprises some lateral walls in two parts, an upper part and a lower part, sepd by a housing that can be used to introduce oil to the mould for lubrication or cater for a compressed air system to form an air cushion between the molten material and the walls of the chill mould. The housing consists of grooves cut into the upper and lower surfaces of the mould components from their inner side and on a part of their width. these grooves are designed to present openings between the surface planes of the upper and lower parts of the mould walls. USE/ADVANTAGE - The foundry chill mould is used in casting applications where it is desirable to introduce oil to the mould surface to lubricate and/or where compressed air is to be introduced to form an air cushion between the molten casting material and the walls of the chill mould. Its major advantages are that it considerably simplifies the mould components, diminishes the number of such components requiring machining operations considerably simplifies the machining of such components and improves the tolerance margins of the machined housings. All of these advantages combine to considerably reduce the fabrication cost of such comonents whilst providing a construction system allowing easy interchangeability for rapid modification of the configuration of the grooves in the housing. The principles involved can be readily applied to a diverse number of different shaped chill moulds, such as for example rectangular, oval and round moulds.
