A measuring apparatus, operating contactlessly with the use of radiation beams (9), for measuring cross-sectional dimensions of elongated work material (1) running through, is calibrated in order to avoid measurement errors as far as possible, in rolling mill plant during each or a plurality of measurement intervals, for example between two pieces of rolled stock. The calibration is effected by means of a gauge member (14) whose exact dimensions are known and which is momentarily introduced into the region of the measuring beams (9). The apparatus is recalibrated during this short period of time, and is then immediately available again for the measuring operation. <IMAGE>
