The hand-operated labelling device attaches labels (to e.g. . goods) from a string of labels and has a casing with a handgrip and appts. carrying a roll of labels. A thermal head and a roller cooperate to print onto the label. A path carries the labels from the roll to between the head and roller. Printed labels are detached from the strip and aligned ready for applying to the goods. The roller is braked whilst the label is being applied to avoid misalignment at the head. The braking is removed after application so that the string can move forward. The braking is applied mechanically and removed electrically.
