The circuit arrangement according to the invention, for processing a video signal, is built into a television camera or monitor. It includes a first automatic contrast heightening circuit, which receives the video signal and has the task of ensuring optimal contrast over the whole image, and a second contrast heightening circuit, which receives the video signal and ensures optimal contrast at the centre of an image aperture, and in all other regions of the image where the contrast is similar to that at the centre of the aperture. The signals from the two contrast heightening circuits are added, to generate a combined image, in which details which would otherwise be difficult to see (dark, backlit regions) appear with greatly increased contrast.
