The invention relates to a method and a device for adjusting an axis, in particular a rotary axis (axis of rotation), an adjusting sensor (4) being set up on an axis (2). Furthermore, provision is made of a position measuring system (1), having an internal, cyclically absolute sensing unit, by means of which the mechanical zero point mark on the axis is approached and the cyclically absolute actual value of the position there is read off and input into the axis controller (16). Starting therefrom, the distance to the desired setting up position of the adjusting sensor is calculated in the axis controller (16), and this position is approached with the axis (2) automatically or by hand. The adjusting sensor (4) is set up at this setting up position, which is situated in the middle of a selectable transmitter cycle of the position measuring system. <IMAGE>
