A pair (1) of tensioning tongs has, on each of its tensioning limbs (2, 4), a sleeve (7, 8) which allows it to be mounted on two journals, one of which can be displaced relative to the other to tension a tensioning pulley of a belt drive. Stretched between the sleeves (7, 8) of the pair (1) of tensioning tongs is a spring (9) which preloads the tensioning limbs (2, 3) in the closing direction. As a result, once the pair (1) of tensioning tongs has been mounted on the journals, the desired tensioning force is produced by this spring (9). <IMAGE>
