A liquid crystal composition components (A) and (B), where (A) is a mixture of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, 4-n-docecyl-4'-cyanopiphenyl and 4-(9-11C alkyl)-4'- cyanobiphenyl (I); (B) is a mixt. of 4-(9-10C n-alkanoyloxy) -4'-cyanobiphenyl (II) and 4-(11-13C n-alkanoyloxy) -4'-cyanopbiphenyl (III). It may also contain component (C), where (C) is 4-(8-12C n-alkoxy)-4'-cyanobiphenyl (IV). The ratio (A):(B) is 95:5 to 45:55 by wt.. Within (A), the ratio of 4-octyl to 4-dodecyl compound is 1:1 to 9:1, and the two together are at least 40% by wt. of (A). Within (B) the ratio of (III) is 55:45 to 95:5 by wt.
