By means of the method, especially the surface quality of ground tools is to be improved. The workpiece (13) to be machined is clamped on a circular receiving plate (10a) mounted eccentrically on a baseplate (10b). The receiving plate (10a) and the baseplate (10b) are equipped with a respective drive, so that they can be driven independently of one another in both directions of rotation and at different speeds. The tool slide (15) carrying the tool (14) can be moved by means of a linear drive in the plane of the receiving plate (10a) or the baseplate (10b). The drives are controlled via a computer. A grinding cylinder acting on the workpiece (3) is therefore always situated tangentially on the respective machining point. The method according to the invention is applicable particularly to the grinding of metallic workpieces with contours differing from the circular shape. <IMAGE>
