PURPOSE:To obtain film electroluminescence element which performs stable dot matrix display by making only a substrate side electrode in a 2-layer structure and in stripes, and making patterning of an opposite electrode unnecessary. CONSTITUTION:A lower electrode 2a, an insulation layer 3, an upper electrode 2b, an insulation layer 4, a light emitting layer 5, an insulation layer 6 and a second electrode 7 are piled up on a glass substrate 1. The electrode 2a and 2b are in stripes perpendicularly intersected each other and constitute the first electrode. A second electrode 7 covers all over the whole display region. An electrode at the display side of the electrodes 2 and 7 is ITO, and a back plate is ITO or Al. The electrode 7 is grounded, applies heteropolar pulse voltage to the electrode 2a and 2b after the phase is changed. An AC electric field is applied to the light emitting layer 5 corresponding to the intersection point of the stripes of the electrodes 2a and 2b, and the light emitting layer 5 emits light in dots so that display of a necessary pattern can be obtained. While no voltage is applied to the electrodes 2 and 7, a floating state is kept between the electrodes 2a and 2b. According to this constitution, the yield is good and the element breakdown during driving rarely occurs. |
