A controlling method for a charge-coupled device decreases the amount of superfluous electric charges by applying a photo shield film (46) over photo sensing elements (31) on a semiconductor substrate (30) with a certain voltage level (-5 volts or +25 volts), then accumulating effectual electric charges in the presence of an light radiation into the photo sensing elements (37) in applying a different voltage level (+5 volts or + 9 volts) to the photo shield film (46) for promoting the production of the effectual electric charges while the reduced superfluous electric charges are swept into the overflow drain (34), then transferring the effectual electric charges to the multiple-stage horizontal shift register (33).
