PURPOSE: To reduce the weight of a steering gear by constituting a hybrid housing with a plastic shell and a metal support sleeve located in the shell, and by improving the shape of the support sleeve and the structure of a bearing assembly or the like journalled in the sleeve. CONSTITUTION: In a hybrid type housing 36 in which a steering rack 12 extends through a rack bore formed in a plastic shell 34, a part of the housing is composed of a metal support sleeve 76, which is composed of a cylindrical large diameter end 78a and a cylindrical small diameter end 78b. A shaft assembly 62 composed of an annular stub shaft 64 and a pinion shaft 66 is rotatably journalled in the support sleeve 76 through bearings 88, 90. An outer race of a bearing 90 is fitted in a counterbored hole 96 at the left end of the small diameter end 78b of the sleeve 76, and a cup-like cap 98 is threadedly engaged with a threaded part of the counterbored hole 96. |
