PURPOSE: To enable to determine clearly the position of the maximum value of a correlation peak eliminating artifacts caused by large velocity inclination, by equipping a detecting device which holds the velocity profile to each segment in the region where the stored value of the correlation peak becomes the maxmum and reconfigures the searched velocity profile. CONSTITUTION: Tow signals Sn (t) and Sn+1 (t) are treated by a correlative circuit 100 operated by a sampling stepΔt. A set of correlation function values of 21+1 supplied by the correlative circuit 100 is supplied to a multiplex/ interpolation circuit 200, and these correlative points are classified by grouping to an N region Zi (i=1,..., N). Zero passing Z1 , Z2 ,..., Zj ,... are detected by a zero-cross detector 300 to make M segmentΔj (j-1,..., M) defined along the axis line (z). When the M segmentΔj (j-1,..., M) are defined, the correlation peak value Pi(z) is calculated in each segment to each region Zi to make a number Pij expressed by the expression I deternable. The value N×M of Pij is stored in a memory 400, and the memory is read by a detector 500. That means, checking is done to find to which region Zi the parameter Pij becomes maximum to each segmentΔj.
