PURPOSE:To improve conversion rate and yield with facilitated recovery and use of catalyst components by using a specific catalyst component in reacting an unsaturated hydrocarbon with phenol and obtaining the subject compound useful as a raw material for polycarbonates, etc. CONSTITUTION:Phenol and an unsaturated hydrocarbon expressed by the formula C3H4 (e.g., methylacetylene or 1,2-dipropadiene) in an amount of 0.05-0.5mol, especially 0.1-0.25mol based on 1mol phenol are used ana preferably reacted at 50-100 deg.C, preferably 50-70 deg.C using a halide of a trivalent lanthanide series element and a hydrogen halide as a catalyst to afford the objective compound. Furthermore, ytterbium trichloride, erbium trichloride, etc., are preferred as the halide of the lanthanide series element. The amount of the hydrogen halide used is preferably within the range of 0.8-1.5mol based on 1mol unsaturated hydrocarbon. |
