PURPOSE:To reduce the running impossibility due to the running out of fuel by constituting so that, when the remaining quantity of fuel becomes less, a speed-change operating means is controlled by a target torque ratio based on an optimum fuel consumption characteristic which has been changed by a running characteristic changing means. CONSTITUTION:The rotating speed of an engine E is continuously changed by an automatic continuously variable transmission 1, and the changed rotating speed is transmitted to driving wheels W to travel a vehicle. In this case, a target torque ratio is set by a target torque ratio setting means 121 in a control part 120 to satisfy a prescribed characteristic such as the maximum power characteristic or the optimum fuel consumption characteristic, and the continuously variable transmission 1 is controlled by a speed-change operating means 100 so as to meet this target torque ratio. When a fuel remaining quantity detecting means 143 detects that the remaining fuel quantity is lower than a prescribed quantity, based on the signal from the fuel remaining quantity detecting means 143, a running characteristic changing means 122 changes the target torque ratio so as to satisfy the optimum fuel consumption characteristic.
