The vehicle wheel clamp, has a plate (1) fitted over the wheel hub supporting a pair of sliding arms extending parallel to the wheel axis, each of which has a gripper (18) fitting behind the wheel. The length of each arm is adjusted via a hydraulic setting mechanism, in dependence on the thickness of the tyre (T), so that the gripper (18) is clamped in contact with the rear face of the tyre. The hydraulic setting mechanism comprises an accumulator (57) an electric motor (27) an oil pump (28) and a pressure limiting valve. Pref. the clamp plate has a coin-insertion device (54) allowing a transmitter (56) to be switched into operation to provide a signal requesting police assistance. ADVANTAGE - Suitable for use with wide range of tyre thicknesses.
