An article of rib knitted hosiery particularly a surgical hose, has a welt A of a band of ordinary woollen yarn with laid-in elastic yarn and a band B of knitted woollen and elastic yarns, these two bands being co-incident in a zone in which both laid-in and knitted yarns occur to provide a grading of the elastic pressure. On upper calf portion of knitted woollen and elastic yarns is also reinforced with laid-in elastic yarn. The remainder of the leg D and foot F is also knitted with woollen and elastic yarns and the ankle portion E may have an additional laid-in elastic yarn. A patterned effect may be obtained, particularly over the portion B, by feeding the ordinary yarn to the plain needles and the elastic yarn to the rib needles of a superimposed coaxial cylinder machine the elastic yarn being tensioned to float clear of the plain needles. For the remainder of the leg D the elastic yarn may be knitted on one set of needles at one feeder for one course and on the other set of needles for the next course, the ordinary yarn being fed to the set of needles not supplied with elastic yarn. Further bands of laid-in yarn may be provided as required and the portion C may be knitted entirely of elastic yarn and may include a zone of both woollen and elastic knitted yarns together with laid-in elastic yarn. The elastic yarn may be of natural or synthetic rubber or yarn such as nylon which has been rendered elastic by crimping, creping, or other treatment. |
