Process for the preparation of phenylethanolaminotetralins of formula: <IMAGE> in which X represents hydrogen, a halogen, a trifluoromethyl group or a lower alkyl group and R<0> represents a methyl group substituted by a carboxyl or lower carbalkoxy group, by reaction of a mandelic acid with a 2-amino-7-hydroxytetralin, alkylation with a lower alkyl haloacetate and by reduction of the amido group of the mandelamide obtained to a methyleneamino group. The intermediate amides are novel.
