A gate-latching apparatus suitable for use in a container having a base, and side walls of which one constitutes a gate (1) comprises a latch bar (11) mounted on the gate (1) and spring-loaded into a latching position, a loop-form detent (14) which is fixed to another one (2) of the side walls and behind which the bar (11) engages, and a guard member (20) in the form of a loop fixed to the gate (1) to protect against accidental unlatching.
