Information processing apparatus includes an image scanner for inputting an image data representing a content of each document as abstract image data, an optical disk unit for storing the input abstract image data, and a display for displaying the abstract image data stored in the optical disk unit in response to a predetermined instruction (e.g. in reduced form). This permits a document to be selected on the basis of an image of its contents, as distinct from just its title.
