The invention relates to a device for switching on hazard warning lights on a motor vehicle. In order to indicate to the driver of a vehicle travelling behind severe deceleration of the vehicle travelling ahead as a result of traffic conditions even if a reduced distance between the vehicles is still not perceptible, the vehicle is provided with a pressure sensor which is integrated in the brake system and is above an adjustable pressure, bringing about full braking, in the brake system and above a predetermined minimum speed of the motor vehicle causes the hazard warning lights and/or a special function of the brake lights to be switched on. If the motor vehicle is provided with an anti-lock brake device, that pressure at which the anti-lock brake device is actuated is used as a measure.
