Process for preparing alpha-ketobutyric acid

A process is provided for preparing alpha-ketobutyric acid, in which 1,2-butanediol is contacted with molecular oxygen in the presence of a platinum catalyst. This process gives alpha-ketobutyric acid in high yields and at low cost.
