Slag produced in garbage and refuse incinerators is subjected to quenching followed by an additional washing process in a washing unit (2). During the washing process, noxious substances such as chlorides and heavy metals are washed out of the slag. The water is then removed from the slag in a separating device (4) and a drying device (7). The slag is dried to a moisture content not exceeding 30 % and the fines with a particle size less than 2 mm are removed from the slag during or after drying. The fines and the washing water sludge contain practically all the soluble noxious substances and must be processed or dumped by special measures. The residual cleaned slag is practically free from soluble noxious substances and can be used as a building material.
|
