In an apparatus for carrying out exothermic catalytic gas reactions for ammonia or methanol synthesis, essentially consisting of a high- pressure shell and an insert with an upper closing cover, the insert containing at least two superposed catalyst vessels (13, 16) in an annular cylindrical arrangement with a gas-permeable inner wall and outer wall for radial gas flow from the outside inwards and two gas/gas heat exchangers (8, 12) of shell-and-tube construction centrally within the first and second catalyst vessel, a solution is to be provided which makes it possible to dispense with a central guide tube. This is achieved when both gas/gas heat exchangers are designed on the tube side for two-pass flow in such a way that the first heat exchanger (8) is connected to the central fresh gas feed pipe (6), the central heat exchanger tubes are connected by means of the intermediate chamber (10) to the central heat exchanger tubes of the second heat exchanger (12), that the peripheral heat exchanger tubes of the second heat exchanger (12) are connected by the intermediate chamber (14) to the peripheral heat exchanger tubes of the first heat exchanger, and the peripheral heat exchanger tubes end in the free space above the heat exchanger. <IMAGE> |
