Derivatives of carboxymethylcellulose containing betaine groups

A compound is disclosed, having the structure of carboxymethylcellulose in which at least one of methyl groups is replaced by a group of the general formula (I):


wherein R<1> is hydrogen or a methyl group, R<2> is a straight chain or branched divalent aliphatic C2-C5 hydrocarbon group,R<3> and R<4> are each independently, a straight chain or branched C1-C4 alkyl group, and R<5> is a divalent straight chain or branched C1-C10 hydrocarbon group, with the proviso that at least 0.1 groups or formula (I) are present on average per anhydroglucose unit of the compounds structures.
These compounds are prepared by a process which involves, as intermediate, a derivative of carboxymethylcellulose in which at least one carboxymethyl group is replaced by a group of the general formula (II):



The compounds are used in cosmetic compositions for application to the hair and in the production of paper and textiles.
