PURPOSE:To safely produce the subject compound, using a hydrogenation catalyst having high activity at low temperature by carrying out the catalytic reduction of an organic carboxylic acid ester with hydrogen in the presence of a specific catalyst produced by reducing a precursor composed of a carrier and a compound metal oxide composed mainly of copper oxide. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by the catalytic reduction of an organic carboxylic acid ester (e.g., formic acid ester and caproic acid ester) with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst produced by reducing a catalyst precursor obtained by supporting (A) copper oxide or a compound metal oxide composed of copper oxide and zinc oxide on (B) a carrier consisting of titanium oxide and/or hydroxide at a weight ratio (A/B) of 15/85-65/35. The amount of the zinc oxide based on the copper oxide in the above catalyst precursor is preferably 0-20wt.%, especially 1-15wt.%. The reduction of the precursor is carried out, e.g., in the case of using hydrogen gas, at 150-500 deg.C until the formation of water becomes undetectable. |
