PURPOSE:To readily, industrially and advantageously obtain the present compound in good yield by oxidizing N-benzyl-2-imidazolemethanol in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt catalyst using an inexpensive alkali metal hypochlorite as an oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION:N-Benzyl-2-imidazolemethanol expressed by formula I is reacted and oxidized with an alkali metal hypochlorite, such as an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, in an amount of 1.0-5.0mol based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt catalyst, such as tetra-n-butylammonium hydrogensulfite, in an amount of 0.05-100mol% based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I in a solvent, such as ethylene dichloride, at -5-+50 deg.C, preferably 0-30 deg.C for 0.5-8.0hr to afford the objective compound expressed by formula II useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in a yield as good as 60-80%. |
