Devices for receiving flat workpieces serve for automation of work operations, in particular in the manufacture of ready-made clothes. The singling of workpieces in connection with the finishing of workpiece stacks is made more difficult by the occasional sticking together of the workpieces which have been deposited one above another. In order to provide a remedy in this case, it is known to make use of stripping brushes and blowing nozzles. A further possibility for assisting singling is proposed, in which vertically aligned needles (1.2, 3.4) are provided in the immediate vicinity of the workpiece gripper (3.2). In needle singling from below, they penetrate the workpiece stack (2) from the bottom to the top. In needle singling from above, they are active as push needles (3.4) which, when a workpiece grasped by the workpiece grippers (3.2) is raised, push off the workpiece lying below which is perhaps adhering to it. <IMAGE>
