The invention relates to a method for the point-wise generation of an image of a running material web, in which the material web is scanned with a light spot line by line transverse to the running direction. The light coming from the light spot onto the material web is detected and converted into an electrical analog signal. The analog signal can then be scanned as a function of a time signal, in order to obtain for each image point of an image line an analog value assigned to it and corresponding to its grey-scale value, which analog value is digitised and subsequently stored in an image store for further image processing. In this case, it is provided that the digitised grey-scale values of all the image points of one image line are stored intermediately before storage in the image store, that the number of the image points scanned during scanning of the intermediately stored image line is then counted and that, before storing the digital grey-scale values of the image points in the image store, the number of the image points detected is reduced to a number of image points which can be prescribed in each case, by extracting the grey-scale values of individual scanned image points distributed over the image line. <IMAGE>
