For the manufacture of coins, a composite layered material is proposed which can be used as a substitute for coins of nickel and consists of the combination of a ferritic chromium steel with an austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Depending on which testing system is available for the nickel coins to be substituted, a composite layered material having a core layer of the ferritic chromium steel and a plating of the austenitic chromium-nickel steel on both sides, making up 2 to 10% of the total thickness, or a core layer of the austenitic chromium-nickel steel with a plating of the ferritic chromium-steel on both sides of 20 to 40% of the total thickness may come into consideration. Optimum approximation to the acceptance ranges of the testing system adjusted for nickel is possible by appropriate choice of the ratios of the layer thicknesses. …<IMAGE>…
