PURPOSE:To enhance catalytic activity at low temp. by forming a catalyst for the gaseous phase hydrolysis of aromatic halide by supporting a copper ion by anionic clay mineral wherein a hydroxy anion is present in an anion exchange site. CONSTITUTION:Anionic clay mineral such as hydrotalcite, tacobite or pyroaurite is baked at 200-650 deg.C in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. Next, the baked one is immersed in an aqueous solution of a copper compound under stirring and subsequently baked to obtain a catalyst supporting copper for the gaseous phase hydrolysis of aromatic halide composed of anionic clay mineral wherein a hydroxy anion is present in an anion exchange site. When aromatic halide such as chlorobenzene or dichlorolenzene is brought into contact with water in a gaseous phase using this catalyst, phenols are obtained. |
