PURPOSE: To combust fuel completely even if the fuel is beyond a normal combustion limit by arranging an opening for gas to flow between a mixing chamber and an annular combustion chamber formed between a piston and a cylinder. CONSTITUTION: Liquefied natural gas is supplied from a storage 24 to an injector 28 by a pump 26. The injector 28 supplies fuel to the interior of a mixing chamber 30. The ignition of the fuel is effectuated by an ignition plug 32. The mixing chamber 30 projects from a wall 20 downward into an annular groove 86 formed on an upper surface of a piston 14. When the piston 14 approaches the wall 20, the mixing chamber 30 enters the groove 86. Fuel flows form the interior of a cylindrical housing 72 through an opening 78 to the space between a wall portion 68 and the cylindrical housing 72, and is ignited. The ignited gas is dispersed in the annular groove 86 by the spiral of combustion gas, mixed sufficiently and combusted completely.
