An optical switching device has an organic thin membrane which selectively changes its optical transmittance of infrared rays in response to an electrical potential applied to the membrane. The membrane can be, for example, a butyl rubber compound polymerized with a functional group having a large electronegativity, whereby the material sharply absorbs infrared rays of wavelengths, in one example of about 3.2 mu m, and whereby the infrared transmittance through the material is shifted in wavelength an amount DELTA lambda , depending upon the applied potential.
|
