A power converter for use in converting a variable DC input voltage into a variable DC output voltage uses control circuitry on both the input and the output to optimise converter performance. The converter comprises an inductor (16) the ends of which are connected through a pair of ganged switches (14,18 and 24,30) to each of the input and output terminals (10,12 and 26,28). The inductor is charged by a timing circuit (20) which closes the input switches (14,18) and opens the output switches (24,30). The duration of charge is dependent on the level of incoming voltage, as sensed by an input comparator (22). When the inductor is charged the timing circuit opens the input switches (14,18) and closes the output switches (24,30) for a duration dependent on the discharge voltage as sensed by an output comparator (34). In an alternative embodiments the inductor is tapped to provide more than one output. The comparators are set to charge the inductor to a point near saturation and to discharge the inductor completely. In this way input and output power capabilities are maximised and the efficiency is improved without undue complexity. |
