PURPOSE:To obtain a light scattering type ferroelectric liquid crystal element which can be driven at a low electric voltage, having sufficiently high storing capacity for display, and enabling and permitting display of a large picture area by a time-divided driving by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal having a specified value of pitch of a chiral structure in a smectic phase and a cholesteric phase. CONSTITUTION:In a ferroelectric liquid crystal element packed with ferroelectric liquid crystals in a space between two substrates having transparent electrodes formed thereon wherein one or both of the substrates is(are) made to have a bearing for orienting liquid crystal molecules in parallel to the substrate(s), a chiral structure is induced or eliminated in a cell by impressing an electric voltage having an appropriate frequency to the liquid crystal element. If the pitch of the chiral structure in a smectic phase of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is >=1mum and <= a length of a gap between the substrates, and the pitch in the cholesteric phase is >= a length of the gap between the substrates, in a liquid crystal material, a light scattering type ferroelectric liquid crystal element capable of being driven at a small electric voltage, having sufficiently high storing capacity for display, and permitting display of a large picture area by a time-divided driving, is realized. |
