A sliding surface or rubbing contact material comprises a metallic base material having at least one surface thereof coated by an oxide of the base material and having pores or cavities which contain a filling mass comprising an oxide of a metal. The unoxidized base material has a greater affinity for oxygen than the unoxidized metal of the filling mass so that if the oxide coating on the surface of the base material is broken, the oxide of the filling mass supplies sufficient oxygen to the surface of the base material to re-generate the oxide coating thereon. The base material may be aluminium, magnesium, titanium and alloys thereof and may be a porous sintered body. The filling mass may consist of lead oxide, silicon dioxide and boron oxide; may be 5 to 50% of the total material; may become semi-liquid at a temperature below the melting temperature of the base material; may serve as a lubricant; and may also contain one or more metals such as tin or lead. In an embodiment, a sintered body had each of its metal grains 1, Fig. 1, coated with an oxide layer 2. The body was immersed into a molten filling material to a depth indicated by the reference numeral 3, thus filling pores 4 but not filling pores 6. When the filling material cooled, additional pores 5 were formed which are suitable for receiving lubricant therein. In another embodiment, the body was totally immersed and all the pores received the filling material. In a further example, a plate 11, Fig. 3, of aluminium for example had an active surface 12 provided with indentations therein. The rest of the surface 12 was then etched to produce pores 13 and oxidized to produce an oxide layer 16. The indentations and the pores 13 were then filled with liquid filling material which, when cooled, produced pores 15 which are suitable for receiving lubricant therein.
