PURPOSE:To obtain in markedly high optical purity in a short time the title compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for epihalohydrins, by making novel strain(s) classified as Pseudomonas act on a racemic dihalogenopropanol in a culture medium. CONSTITUTION:Bacteria (or cultured strains therefrom) selected from novel strains: OS-K-9 strain (FERM P-9769), OS-K-74 strain (FERM P-9771) and OS-K-76 strain (FERM P-9770), each classified as Pseudomonas, having R-(+)-2,3- dichloro or dibromo-1-propanol-utilizing ability is made to act, in a culture medium, on racemic 2,3-dichloro or dibromo-propanol, thus obtaining the objective S-(-)-2,3-dichloro or dibromo-1-propanol. |
