1,081,537. Aircraft arresting gear. P. B. FONDEN, and K. O. T. WALANDER. April 29, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No. 18083/65. Heading B7G. An aircraft arresting cable or net is attached to one or more brakes at each end, and is connected between each end and its aircraft engaging portion to a damping device arranged to resist transverse oscillations of the cable or net and located on the side of the cable or net from which the aircraft arrives. The damping device may comprise a cable extending to a brake such as an hydraulic damper either directly (Fig. 3, not shown) or over pulleys (Fig. 6, not shown) or a weight attached to the cable or net by a spring (Figs. 1, 2 and 7, not shown) or a cable anchored to the ground and drawn taut when the cable or net is moved by an aircraft (Fig. 5, not shown). The connection to the arresting cable or net is by a releasable fastening, for example a shear pin or a claw fastening (Fig. 7, not shown) opened by a cable attached to the ground when the fastening has moved a predetermined distance. |
