PURPOSE:To obtain the subject substance useful as a raw material for optical material, etc., simply by the concentration of liquid after decoloration process, with little side reactions, by esterifying 2,3-dichloropropanol with (meth)acrylic acid in a specific solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by reacting 2,3- dichloropropanol with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in a non-polar aprotic solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst at 0-200 deg.C, preferably 50-160 deg.C usually under normal pressure for about 1-6hr. The non-polar aprotic solvent used in the above reaction is a solvent having a dielectric constant of <=2.10 and a solubility parameter of 6.0-8.0, e.g., pentane, hexane, cyclohexane and methylcyclopentane. The acid catalyst is sulfuric acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. The amount of 2,3-dichloropropanol is preferably 1.2-1.3mol per 1mol of the (meth)acrylic acid. |
