PURPOSE:To decrease the encoded data quantity by detecting the periodicity of a series of data, dividing said series of data by the detected period concerned and executing MR or MMR encoding with regard to the divided data concerned. CONSTITUTION:In case an image has such a periodicity as it goes to the same pattern at every N lines, when image data of width W and height H which is stored in a memory 1 is compressed by a compressing device 2, an image of the memory 1 is compressed by width WXN and height H/N, and an MMR code of its result, and width W and height H and a period N of an image area are stored in a memory 4. Also, at the time of expanding, by information which is stored in the memory 4, first of all, the MMR code is decoded by lateral width of WXN, and also, converted to image data of width W and height H, by which an original image is reproduced. Thus, an extremely high compressibility is obtained. |
