Zwitterionic bicyclic compounds are disclosed which are useful as anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and/or cytoprotective agents. Pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treatment employing such compounds are also disclosed. The compounds have the structural formula I I wherein W and X may be the same or different and each independently represents -CH= or -N= ; Z1 and Z2 are the same or different and each independently represents O or S; R1 to R5 represent various organic groups; Q represents an aryl or an aromatic heterocyclic group, Y represents various substituents.
