The invention relates to a method and an arrangement 1 for monitoring the condition of a battery 2 which is charged by a rectifier 3 and which, when the rectifier is disconnected, supplies equipment or a load 4 with energy. Checking the condition of the battery takes place when the rectifier cannot provide energy to the load as a result of mains failure or when the arrangement orders the rectifier not to provide energy, which happens at regular intervals. The ordering can be blocked by external and/or internal conditions. When mains failure has occurred, the voltage of the battery will fall. When the voltage across a first block 2.1 has fallen below the level defined by a comparator 1.1, a timing circuit 1.2 is started. If the voltage across any block 2.1-2.n has fallen below the level defined by comparators 1.31-1.3n before the time in the timing circuit 1.2 has expired, the block will be indicated by an indicator 1.41-1.4n. Measurement is interrupted and the rectifier 3 is ordered by the arrangement 1 to provide energy again when the time in the timing circuit 1.2 has run out or when a block 2.1-2.n has been indicated.
